Devotees are requested to please go through this very carefully and try and maintain the cleanliness and Sanctity of the holy dham while our visit to the Dham during our annual Kartik Yatra-2009.
We received a mail from the Mayapur Temple we are sharing with everyone and will request not one or two but all to be the part of the clean team.
To the Dear Devotees of the Lord who are arranging the annual pilgrimages with H H Radhanath Swami,Hare Krishna!
Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
My name is Julia Carlberg and I belong to the Stockholm yatra where I am very nicely being taken care of dear deciples of Radhanath Swami Maharaj- our Temple president Tapas Prabhu and his wife Lajjavati Mtj. I am also a student of bhakti shastri and bhakti vaibhav at the Mayapur Institute which means that I spend six months each year in Mayapur Dham.
In Mayapur I take part in a group calling itself the Mayapur Dham Clean team. Our prospective is to preserve the natural environment in Mayapur Dham and in due time make Mayapur the cleanest place in the whole of India. This means that we regularly go to clean ourselves in the streets, we plan for long time solutions as well as trying to preach to locals, foreigners and pilgrimages about environmental consciousness and especially the dangers of excess use of plastic. We cooperate with another group who share our vision called Friends of Mayapur.
We have identified it as a problem that in yatras and parikramas ISKCON devotees leave a lot of rubbish behind in the holy places.
At the Gaura Purnim Parikrama this year The Mayapur Dham Clean Team worked together with the ISKCON management trying avoid this problem and encourage devotees to be conscious and to take responsibility to leave the holy places of pilgrimages clean. Some improvement surely was made in terms of less littering.
Because of this concern I am now turning to you with a humble request that you plan for good disposal of garbage during the yatra. I would like to suggest some measures on how to protect the ecology of the holy Dham and keep it clean - for the pleasure of the Lord as well for preaching through example.
1. To inform the pilgrims before leaving for the yatra if possible in the yatra leaflets that it is of a high concern to keep the Dham clean and that we all should remind each other not to litter on the way.
2. To announce each day during the yatra that devotees bring back their garbage to the ISKCON camps.
3. Not to give out prasadam in plastic bags or cups. (Plastic bags with murlie was unfortunately left in many places on the Mayapur Yatra 2007. I picked up hundreds of them.. On the Vrindavan yatra 2008 the situation of littering was improved a lot though.)
4. To arrange for garbage bins that can be put up in the different places we visit.
5. To request the devotees to bring and use their own steel cups while buying sugarcane uses or coconuts etc on the way instead of using plastic cups and straws. (Plastic cups from sugarcane juices has been a big problem during Gaur Purnima Parikramas)
6. To arrange for a clean team of devotees who make sure we leave the spots of the pastimes of the Lord clean.
Please consider these points. I have been fortunate enough to partake in two yatra with H H Radhanath Swami and on two Gaur Purnim Parikramas. It has been such a wonderfull experiences but it has really hurt my heart to see how ISKCON devotees leaves holy places of the Lord in a mess.
In my opinion the most efficient measures for keeping the yatras clean is when authorities and if possible Maharaj himself anounces this concern of keeping the Dham clean. Generally devotees follow what authorities and the Gurus say.
Please let me know your view on this concern and suggestions and let me know how I can serve in the yatra.I am glad to assist you in any way and I would be honoured to be on the clean team of the yatra.
Your aspiring servant bhaktin Julia (sheltered by H H Jayapataka Swami)
